Deelname Alpe d’HuZes: fietsen voor KWF Kankerbestrijding

09-05-'12
Header 'Alpe d'HuZes'

Read more »

Your Hotel Reservation System as a Customer Decision Support System (CDSS)

18-04-'12

I often work with the Landscape Model as proposed by Verhagen (1999). Even though this is a rather old article -that has been written in 1999- the model still guides my thinking when developing effective websites and online systems. The model can guide my thoughts in new perspectives and channels my thinking in the right direction. In this blog -without getting to scientific- I look at the Hotel Reservation System in their websites from the perspective of the CDSS and look at what we can learn from that.

My conclusion? Far to many hotels forget that their booking process on their hotel website is an important element in the customer buying decision process.

Pluralization in Joomla! – The mysterious ‘S’

14-04-'12
Post Header: 'How-to'

Although I usually try to prevent working with Joomla!, recently I had to build a customized website in this CMS. For this website, I created three interacting components with backend management panels from scratch. As I never had worked with Joomla! 1.7.x or above, I followed the tutorial ‘Developing a Model-View-Controler (MVC) Component for Joomla!2.5‘ which I located through Google. Although this tutorial is rather long (18 parts, of which about 15 are completed), the tutorial only covers the creation of a basic component and does not elaborate on the functionality of the used classes or the underlying logic. With the new knowledge gained, I was able to produce two of the components without major problems. However, during the creation of a third component I ran into a problem caused by a ‘feature’ of the Joomla! CMS: automatic pluralization. Read more »

Avoiding Facebook cookie tracking in Chrome

05-10-'11
Facebook Header

After the news by Nik Cubrilovic that Facebook keeps tracking cookies after users log out, I decided to make a small extension to remove these cookies automatically. The extension provided in this article is triggered when users visit a website in Google Chrome or Chromium. Once triggered, it will remove all cookies set by Facebook if it detects that you have logged out from it. By removing these cookies, it is no longer easily possible to track you while you browse on other pages on the web. Although the extension is not optimized yet (the code could probably be shorter and execution somewhat faster), the extension has been tested on several machines and it seems to work great.
